Benevolence in a recession: Churches help needy, try to screen out greedy |

The Christian Chronicle has published an article on Church benevolence in tough times.
An exerpt from The Christian Chronicle article:
WHO’S A SCAMMER? “Repeat customers” are a concern for many churches.
“Those who really need help are generally reluctant to ask,” said Jackie Chesnutt, minister and elder at the Southside church in Rogers, Ark., which provides a free community lunch each Thursday. “Many who are quick to ask for help are generally poor money managers, poor decision makers and have become so dependent on agencies, churches and government that they don’t know how to take steps to help themselves.”

Sheri Acuff called her husband back a short time later.
“I told him it was going to be all right, that everything would be OK,” she recalled.
Speaking with someone who has lost his job is like speaking with someone who has lost a loved one, said Jackie Chesnutt, the pastor of Southside Church of Christ in Rogers.
“I feel terribly inadequate in situations like that. People expect me to say something wise, and I just don’t know that much,” Chesnutt said.
“These things generally will pass, there’s always a solution, but the problem is living in the present,” he said. |
ROGERS, The Morning News -- As a former Bible bookstore owner, Jack Hammond understands the hunger for the Word.
He also knows how hard it is for people to make sense of Scripture -- a 4,000-year-old collection of history, law, poetry and the writings of major and minor prophets.
Readers lack the understanding to put select passages in context, Hammond said. To address that need, he developed a curriculum he calls "The Searcher."
